Middleton the Man in ASA at BMS!

By John Meeks - Speedway Media

It was another beautiful night for racing at the ASA Sanctioned Bronson Motor Speedway and the crowd was buzzing with excitement as the stars of the RC-Cola/Moon Pie ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour invaded the high banks of Bronson for the Flagship RV Gator 100. Also the local racers were on hand to show their skills to the large crowd that was in attendance. Not only did the Limited Sportsman feature end with a different winner, a new face was able to put the brakes on a winning streak in the Super Stock Division as well. With the addition of qualifying, it was an action packed night of excitement for the whole family.

The ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour brought a lightning quick field of cars that was tightly bunched after qualifying. Fast time was set by Daniel Keene, Jr at 13.064 with Travis Cope second at 13.073, followed by Jay Middleton third quickest. After the top five redrew for position, Keene was lucky enough to hold onto the top spot. First off, the race fans would be treated to an on track autograph session and a chance to meet their favorite drivers. After Honorary Starter, Tom Cooper of Flagship RV dropped the green flag it was a mad dash to turn one. Every driver in the field was trying to get to the bottom of the track in the preferred groove. Middleton, in his Redneck Pepper/Mike Cope Racing machine, made a “bonsai” move from the outside of two to take over second spot behind leader Keene. Chris Fontaine and Travis Cope were in hot pursuit of the duo. Travis Cope was able to pass Fontaine and chased down the leaders. Then, it was Middleton stealing the show on a nifty move on the restart to take the point. Middleton was able to survive a few restarts inside 25 laps to go to take the top prize. Keene had to settle for second while Tyler Millwood would wind up third, Chris Fontaine fourth, Curt Jett in fifth and Travis Cope came home 6th.

After all the excitement of the ASA Tour, there was still plenty of action for the race fans! The Thunder Stocks would come out and put on a fabulous show with everything a race fan could hope for. There was passing, and crashing throughout the event. When the dust settled it would be Larry Welter Sr. in victory lane.

A great field of Super Stocks was on hand as all eyes were on four time winner Brent Cooper. At the end it appeared Tommy Ausburn might be able to win his first feature of the season. Larry Welter, Jr. would have a different idea on how the race should go. Welter Jr. powered by Ausburn and held off a late charge from Cooper to end his streak at four straight.

The Limited Sportsman took center stage for the grand finale! Shelton “Slack” Bowers was cruising to another win in the Sportsman series before a mechanical failure ended his night some nine laps from the end of the event. Matt Blum assumed the lead and held off a charging Mike Baker. Blum’s second win of the season also ended a streak of three straight wins for Baker.

In other speedway news, the Hornet Division is building up and we had a few competitors take to the speedway in two divisions! Anyone interested in racing, this is the beginner class that you could be racing in soon! This Saturday Night May 17th, in Honor of Armed Forces Day, All Military Personnel – Active and Retired – will be admitted in the grandstands free! Our Limited Sportsman, Super Stocks, Thunder Stocks and Hornets will all be in action! Adult admission in the Grandstands Only $ 10.00 and Kids 11- Under are Free!
